Lactulose 3.3 g/5 mL oral solution (0.66 g/mL). An osmotic laxative for constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. Titrate to 2–3 soft stools a day.

How it works
- Osmotic laxative for acute and chronic constipation; effect in 24–48 h.
- In hepatic encephalopathy it reduces absorption of ammonium and other toxic nitrogenous compounds.
- Can be mixed with water, juice or milk.
Key cautions
- Contraindicated in galactosaemia and GI obstruction.
- Contains lactose and galactose: caution in lactose intolerance and diabetes.
- Flatulence and cramps are common early; reduce the dose if diarrhoea occurs.
